“I am the LORD thy God … Thou shalt have no other gods before me”. (Exodus 20:2-3). What is the meaning of the use of the personal pronoun “I”. Does it mean that God is not a cosmic or supernatural supra-cosmic power, but is a specific person?
God reveals Himself as a person with whom human communication is implemented within personal relationships. With this accentuation of the personal quality, in the Bible God is depicted as a loving father, a caring parent who cares for His children – man and all creation (Deuteronomy 32:6; Isa. 63:16, 64:8, Malachi 2:10; Jer. 3:19, 31.9, Matthew 6:9, 26, 7:11, Luke 6:35-36, 12:32, John 6:27, Romans 8:15-16, 1 John 3:1).
The uniqueness of the conception of God in Christianity is the idea of loving and forgiving, but also just and true, personalized God, who has appeared in the history of humanity with revelational influences, as well as His private revelation bringing into believer’s life.
With this understanding, the imagination of God’s existence and activities is out of deism, which is the imagination of upper supernatural power, indifferent to human life. But the true understanding is based on the idea of theism that teaches God’s presence and participation in human’s individual life and in the history of the world.
It should be noted that other concepts, different from theism, is pantheism according to which nature and the universe are identical with divinity, and also panentheism, which emphasizes that the divine interpenetrates through nature and universe.
