Nowadays there is an alarm about the decline of religious values. In Italy, Catholicism no longer unites the people, Netherlands’ audacious position on morality and euthanasia, according to some, reflects the fact that the country is rapidly moving away from Christianity. Does the recession of spiritual and religious values have a general character?
“Decline of religious values” refers mainly to the negative attitude or deterioration of these values, as the values themselves exist and we can not depreciate them. Countries mentioned above are mostly Western European states where the reality is different from Eastern countries.
Particularly in western European countries, secular morality is created as a parallel with Christian morality, and the state authorities support this process. That is why such states adopt laws about gay marriages, adoption of children by gays, sexual relations with animals is acceptable, even in some countries, the legislation forces churches to bless non-traditional marriages.
Considering this fact, we can talk about religious and secular or theistic and atheistic parallel morals that may also contain different principles. When people reject the idea of God in the understanding of morality, then such a morality often turns into immorality.
Under the name of Human Rights, ideologies of wicked deeds are being imported in society as if they are specious; efforts are being made to present those deniable realities as a common and acceptable phenomenon.
Today Human Rights are understood as only obedience to the state and the international laws but complete freedom from moral laws, especially from the dependence of Christian commandments.
In religious understanding, this form of freedom from morality, on the contrary, leads to service and slavery to sin. It is entirely contrary to the Christian understanding of freedom, about which the apostle teaches: “Ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness” (Romans 6:17-18). “Brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another” (Galatians 5:13). “Live as free men, and not using your liberty for a pretext of maliciousness, but as the servants of God” (1 Peter 2:16).
The decline of devotion and respect for religious values associate with the church history, which is quite different in Europe and other countries or America.
From the medieval history of the Catholic Church, we know that the Church (here Church refers to the ecclesiastical institution management holders) has provoked wars, exploited and made tribulations of the people. They burned not only heretics on the inquisition bonfires, which is reprehensible too, but also the representatives of science and people having advanced thinking and ideas.
The history of Oriental Churches is completely different. For example, the Armenian Church has cared for its people and guided the nation, and that is why the Armenians call it as the Mother Church. In the same medieval era, science and advanced mind not only were not being persecuted but also science, writing, the arts, the culture developed in the bosom of the Church, under the patronage of the Church or the clergy.
Church history, past events also shape the attitude towards the Church and Christian values. In Catholic countries, the reason for the contradictory attitude to the Church as well as to religious values is also lying in sinful deeds of Catholic clergy in recent years, especially the revelations and sensational trials of the cases of pedophilia.
For some people, the reason of those facts is the celibacy since priests in the Catholic Church, without exceptions, are not allowed to marry. But sinful processes come not from defect of the institute of celibacy, but from the human factor, from the more loving human vices.
